Default Alternator belt on 3.0L Mercruiser

Question for anyne who has or previously owned a 3.0L Mercruiser......

The drive belt for the alternator on this engine is a huge pain anyone who has owned one probably knows that as it requires removing a small part of the motor mount to replace the belt. This part I have done however, I also noticed there is next to no clearance to fit the belt between the top of the motor mount and what I believe is the water pump pully? I got the old belt out by using quite a bit of force however not really comfortable forcing the new one in that way. Is there a different way to get it through there? Do I actually have to take the pulley off?!?

Thanks!
