Default 2001 Maxum 2100 SR out drive instantly stop working

Today I was cruising with 3200 RPM.....the engine RPM go up and lost the out drive.
The only test i have on it, with the engine off engage the drive and try to spin the prop with my hand. Spin in one way but not on the other. engage in revers, then don't spin on the way was spinning before, but spinning on the Other way...
Was no noise before this happen.
I have to call for towing...
Any ideas what can be wrong?

Sounds like you have bad coupler.
The coupler is on the flywheel at the back of the engine.
Pull outdrive off and pull the engine.
Good luck.

Sorry to hear this but the drive sounds ok. The reason the prop only spins in one direction is because in gear the clutch dog is engaged to turn the prop and you cannot turn against it.

Sounds like either the prop hub or engine coupler spun. Both are rubber break away units to protect the drive and or engine when an object is hit. The issue is the rubber can fail after 10 years due to age.

Use a center punch to mark the inner and outer hubs of the prop so that the two marks are aligned then run the boat until it happens again and check to see if the marks are still aligned. If it slips they will not be.

In the engine compartment check for smells of rubber at the back of the engine. If you smell rubber the coupler went.

The upper outdrive gears are busted.
The oil seal from the shaft was damage and lost oil and that's why the gear got busted.
I will not take any chances to rebuild to upper parts. I may have some metal down in the lover section...
Is a Alpha 1 outdrive. I just order a new unit what come with 3 years warranty.
Thanks for your input guys.

Probably for the best. One you shear gears, you need to replace the broken gears, all the bearings and seals in the upper and lower anyway. Unless you do it yourself, the materials plus labor get you about 70%% of the way to the cost of a new drive anyway.

A new drive has all the gears, seals, bearings, and the replacement takes about 20 minutes and is a DIY project.

Yep.
That's why I got the new.
I can do that for fun but not now. Now I need the boat in the water for other fun.
And for $160 more I change all the lowers to, so will have no problem for 5 years or more.
The boat will be ready for this weekend.
Tomorrow I instal all the new lowers and Friday the outdrive, what should be here on Friday morning.
Thanks for your input shrew.

Is this a sterndrive engineering unit?

I know some folks who have been happy with their products and some not. the ones who were not did get free replacements but needed that 5 year warranty.

I know that if I were asked to spend an extra 1-2K or lose half of my summer, I'd gladly cough up the money.

Is the replacement really only $160 more than the sheared gears plus all the seals and bearings? Plus a warranty?? That would be a no-brainer for me.

No, the outdrive was close to $2500 but I got 10% of. Alpha 1 2nd generation.
The $160 extra was for all this:

That picture looks like a Bravo kit and not and Alpha; Bravo uses O-rings to seal drive to bellhousing while the Alpha has an overall gasket and o-ring for the water passage

Yes I do. I just come back from the bay. Everything run just great.
I drop the boat in water at Anchor Marina from North East town Maryland. I run out to Turkey Points, from there up to the CD Canal, to Delaware River and back. Was a nice smud trip. Gut some sunburn...but not to bad.
Thanks for asking.

Glad to hear you’re up and running. Top of the Bay around Turkey point is one of my favorite destinations to sit and relax.

I may see you there. I do like that site to.
Do you have a name for the boat?

No I never named her. I only get up that way once or twice a year. I have not even been out once yet this year between work, weather, and house renovations.
