Default starter bendix

So when I purchased my boat it had a starter problem. No big deal, pulled it and took it to the local starter guru. turns out it had a sheared bendix gear. So Marv (local starter guru) gets me a new bendix from a place in phenix and Im good to go. But He mentions its posible the flywheel may be marred, and maybe that caused the sheared bendix . So a couple hundred lake miles later it looks like the gear is sheared again, but this time when it happened the timing on the engine had moved. Turns out the dist was loose. So question is any one have same problems with these sterters, Or think that the timing being off could cause this?

definitely timing....it probably caused a backfire or something or tried to spin the engine backwards which sheared the bendix...I've seen it done in cars before....
