Default New To Club

Hello - new to club, having recently purchased 1900SCR (2000) with MerCruiser 4.3l Alpha Drive. Had a good couple of weeks on the water here in a Seattle, however, was caught out last weekend with engine that wouldn’t start. Friend of mine (mechanic) discovered broken tooth on flywheel, suggesting stater replacement as well. I’m having problems locating the right flywheel as local shop(s) indicate there are five “different” flywheels that may have been used. I’d like to hear advice from others on who the online “go to” parts vendors are. Seems to me it should be relatively straight-forward to find the right parts based on engine / engine serial number. Thanks in advance. Itching to get back on the water. Thanks, Dan

Welcome aboard.
The best way is to get the engine out and then you see what type of flywheel you need. That is some thing what you may find loco.
Good luck.

Welcome Aboard

Not an expert but the only differences I know of is the two piece vs one piece main seal flywheel and yours is a one piece late model Vortec.

BTY what were the symptoms of not starting? Missing one tooth typically will cause grinding noise but the engine will still turn over.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I, too, am puzzled. Engine no-start symptom: starter initiates engagement for split second, then you feel (and hear) a hard stop. We can see one of the flywheel teeth missing - maybe joint issue with starter AND flywheel. I need / want to replace both components. In my post I was trying to get some advice on where to turn to purchase components on-line (from reputable , experienced vendor). Local dealer wants $750 for flywheel and $ 250 for starter (maybe these days Amazon is the meta-source for all things).

I usually get part numbers and check prices on marineengine.com. You can shop around once you know correct part. SEI, Sierra, Quicksilver, and Mercury Marine all provide reliable parts.
I gotta ask though, are you sure that your exhaust manifolds are in good shape? Consider removing your spark plugs and rotating engine a few turns to ensure you didn't get any water in the cylinders. Flywheels are expensive and I'd hate to see you ding your new one.

Buying those kind of parts on line is risky and tricky... If you get the wrong part the shipping cost to return will eat up any savings fast...

but.. you could start here :

So when the starter engages it suddenly stops?

Could the engine be hydolocked?

Remove all spark plugs and try to turn the engine over by hand. Strap wrench on the balancer.
