Default Looking to repower 96 2400 SCR 5.7L Carb Alpha1G2

My 5.7L engine needs replaced. The boat has always been under powered.
I was trying to decide if it's worth going with a new, "upgraded" engine that has more horse power. Of course money plays a part here!

I would prefer a new fuel injected engine that I could "drop in" but I have no idea where to start looking. The Alpha 1/Gen 2 drive would stay. And I would have to have a shop do the work.

Several months ago I saw a post about replacing an engine on a boat like mine but can't find it now (as usual).

What's my options/costs.

Thanks!
Nick

The A1G2 is rated to 300 HP.

In 2016 I replaced my 5.7 LX 260 HP with a Vortec long block and kept my carb, vast improvement. My boat is a 1997 2400 SCR with a Bravo 2 drive. Do t think Mercruiser is sealing new 5.7 MPIs anymore but is now using the 6.2L MPI if you are looking for brand new but I’m sure you can find third party selling the 5.7 MPI.

I have the 6.2L / BIII combination in my 2500SE and it performs great.

The 6.2L is the current 8 cylinder small block and would be the new replacement for the 5.7. Just like the 8.2 is the new big block and replaces the 454 and 8.1. 4.5 is the new 6 cylinder replacing the 4.3.

Thanks shrew!

My local marina suggested I could get into a "dressed out" 6.2L, I think he said the purchase price would be about $7000 or $8000 plus $1800 labor.
I will have to wait at that price!
I'm also wondering if the gauges on my 1996 would still work... tach, voltage, temp, oil pressure or if all the gauges are now using an engine on-board computer.

You should be able to use your analog gauges but will have the option to go with Mercruiser’s smart gauges.
