Default High 5 prop pitch

I've got an 1900 SR3 with Merc 5.0/Alpha One. Looking at getting a High 5 prop for better hole shot. Have found one for sale for a good price but is a 19 pitch. But I'm not sure what would be an appropriate pitch. Any suggestions?

Cheers

Thats going to be a little high for you... depends what you do tho.

I'd look for a 21-23" to give you lots of low down grunt and still maintain a respectable top-end.

Thanks Brit. I've picked up a 21". I'll let you know how it turns out (in a couple of weeks).
Cheers

I just installed my 21p High 5 and my '08 2200 Sr3 5.0l MPI.

But I haven't been able to run it yet! AAARRRRGGGGHHH! Independance day weekend certainly did not work out like I wanted it to.

I feel like Charlie Brown with the football.

How'd yours do?

I'll post my results when I get them.

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks. We are taking the boat out for a boating holiday in southern B.C.

I finally got a chance to run the 21p High 5. Didn't love it. (5.0 mpi, 1.62 ratio, Maxum 2200 sr3).

First prop 21p alum, weak holeshot, topped "around" 50 on speedo, 4900 rpm. I wanted to know how much of a difference the design of the High 5 made with the same pitch. Maxed at 4600 rpm indicating 48ish (waving) on the speedo. Holeshot was maybe moderately better.

Cool that the dealer I purchased the boat and prop from is allowing me to dial in the prop that I want.

Have just installed 19p Enertia, haven't run it yet, but I wanted to try it. The dealer thinks I will settle on a 19p High 5.

High 5 definately felt smooth, just not want I wanted.

When I get the pitch and prop dialed in, I will play with the venting, that sounds promising.

I'm curious to know why the 5.0 MPI, with 260 horse and 302 lb/ft seems to be an under-performer. My last boat had a Mercruiser 198. 305 v8, 2bbl, 198 horsepower, pushing a pristine 1980 Century 2000 (371 hours when I sold it spring of 07). That boat felt like it could pull a team of skiers and still ran 47 mph. The weights are similar, although that one was 17 1/2 feet instead of 22. I wish I had paid more attention to the pitch of that prop. It also had a trimmed down wing on the leg.

Maybe when I get it dialed in.

Finally got to test the Enertia 19p, and actually took the GPS to get real numbers.

I was able to achieve 5000 rpm, (was 4600 with H5 21) maybe half a needlewidth above. GPS indicated 51.1 mph, gauge indicated 56mph! That means, speedo error notwithstanding, picked up 5-6mph over stock 21p alum and 7-8 mph over High 5 21p. (2 people, 40 gallons fuel, no other equipment)

Holeshot was much improved, we are definately making progress. I must say I like the Enertia.

Next step, since the original goal was to improve holeshot, try the 19p High 5. I like the smoothness, just didn't want to destroy the top end speed.

With the H5 21, the boat seemed to porpoise more than usual, but the lake conditions were different, not sure how much of that to blame on the prop.

Well, I got a very good chance to test out the new prop, and I am somewhat ambivalent. A drop of top end speed of about 5 mph, which is fine, but not much of a difference in low end grunt. Yes, there was some increase but I guess I was expecting a bit improvement. Perhaps the bow rise (which has always been large) is hiding the change. My next project will be trim tabs and I suspect that will, together with the new prop, give me what I am looking for.

Interesting comment re porpoising. I too noticed an increase. It is definitely more prone to it now and at higher speeds can even be set off by a large wake or rolling wave. I have to be active on the trim switch.

Cheers

NT, did you get your prop at a place where they will let you swap?

I keep telling myself that I should try the 19p High 5 but I am beginning to love the 19p Enertia.

The holeshot is better than what I started with, and better than the 21p High 5. I spoke with the counter guy, where I purchased, about venting it to see what that does with the holeshot. He suggested to take one plug out instead of changing them. I asked if that would make it shake. He said there was no "balance" to venting.

It definately made a difference, although it shook like mad while accelerating. I put the plug back in, BUT, I really think I'm going to vent this prop for better start, and keep the "extra" 6 mph on the top end.

You really can get both, depending on what you start with.

I have a 2006 with a 5.0l AND A 1.47:1 drive ratio and so far a 17p Enertia is hands down the best prop I have tried.

Unfortunately cannot swap the prop. I picked it up from EBay.

I think that about seals it. I'm just going to go pickup some vented plugs and keep this prop.

The porpoising (H5) (sp?), loss of top end (H5), prop vent option (Ener), proper rpm range (Ener), all point to the same prop. The planing speed between all these props was the same.

Next, I'll look into dropping the speed to hold plane with the lower unit wings or the stabilizers.
