I replace the fuel pump and after running for a day and a half everything seemed to be fine. Cruising along at 3000 rpm the engine sputtered backfired and wouldn't start. Troubleshooting revealed I didn't have any spark at the coil. I ran a bypass wire from positive side of the battery to positive side of the coil. And it fired right up. I will be checking the wiring this weekend. Ugggg

Always somethin, ain't it Todd? Does that thing have an electronic ignition or a points ignition?

Dan, I love project boats...keeps me busy. Its electronic ignition. I have the wiring diagram. Going to dig into it this weekend. Since I just replaced the eng, I am hoping its a loose wire/bad connection.

On the good side... Love the Boat, handles better that I thought it would, and we spent 3 nights on it so far. The nights are still really cold, and summer is coming soon I hope!!!! Glad I had brought blankets. LOL but once the sun came up it was comfortable. Looking forward to warm summer nights. Just wish I had AC power when hanging on the hook. A inverter is on my project list. I was concerned about the batteries. Hanging out on the hook and using the battery all night for the Lights, radio, and refrigerator. I expected to have to switch to my other battery but she fired right up in the morning. This boat came with a chartplotter and it is awesome! still learning how to use all the features. The "Tracks" it keeps are very helpfull when navigating at night.

I hear ya about the projects, but after spending a great deal of last summer working on my kitchen remodel, instead of boating, I'm kinda ready to be project-less for a while.

Since it started and ran with direct 12V to the coil whatever the issue is has got to be pretty simple, since you proved that ignition system itself is fine.

Glad you're having fun with the boat despite the chilly temps. I'm guessing that running the AC off the inverter will definitely kill at least one battery though. Agree with the chartplotter, very nice to have those cookie crumbs to follow home.

It appears I have a bad Coil,

I think this is what happened to my coil!

Your plug gap is based on the output of your coil. The hotter the coil, the wider the gap. A 30,000 volt coil would gap at .035", a 40,000 volt coil will gap from .042 - .045", and a hot (50,000 - 60,000) coil will gap at .050" - .060". The early distributors had a 30,000 volt coil, so it depends on which application coil you have, that determines the proper gap. This is why most people will tell you .045" as this is the middle of the road, and will work just fine, but will strain the older coil, and cause it to overheat and eventually died...

I didn't have a Coil laying around but I did have a HEI distributor. Put it in, wired it up.... and the eng fired right up. Takin her out Friday for a test run! If this works I'll be ordering a Marine HEI distributor !

I could just replace the Coil, but I like the HEI distributor. Higher Voltage, Hotter spark, pick up a few more Hp and should get better Fuel economy

Test run was good, no problems at all. I didn't change the gap on the plugs (.060) but the eng ran good. So I ordered a Marine HEI distributor (60,000 Volt), plug wires and Pig tail $350.00 [ouch!] from Ebay [http://www.ebay.com/itm/370813542627...:1123&vxp=mtr]. Should be here by Friday, just in time for the weekend!

I'll take pic's of the installation, including gaping the plugs.

Good thing it's only money.

Be careful with that plug gap though. I've never seen an automotive application with a plug gap of .060. Like you mentioned above a wider gap forces the coil to work that much harder leading to heat and premature death of it. I wouldn't run a gap of anymore than .045. You won't feel or see whatever extra power or economy - IF any, you might get with a wider gap.

Does that new distributor have the correct advance curve for your application?

Dan, Yes its made for Mercruiser, here's what it says on thier web site: [http://www.aaamarine.com/servlet/the...LE/Categories]

Not sure what the timing curve is but I assume (Bad word) it Ok for Mercruiser.

ChevProMarine electronic ignition distributor latest design ON SALE
Want to eliminate your external coil and all its wiring and connections including the resistor? THIS HEI MARINE DISTRIBUTOR IS FOR YOU! It's totally self contained, and with our great epoxy 50,000 volt coil you can increase your spark plug gap to .060 for the greatest in both performance and economy.

.060 sounds like alot to me also. Maybe I should try .045 for a few hours and pull a plug or two and see what they look like.

I've been all over the WEB looking and some say .035, others say .045, a few said .050/.055. I think Carb tuning, Timing, 87 vrs 89 octane Fuel, compression. not a one size fits all kinda thing

Another question. I think I asked before but is your current distributor a points type? I ask because some tachs designed for a points style ignition don't like/won't work with certain electronic ignitions.

Looked at that link - it appears that the distributor that is on sale comes with a 30K coil instead of the 50K. But it also says that it does have an advance curve suitable for a marine application - though they don't specify what the actual curve is. Click on Detailed Description....

Sweet!

FedEx dropped off a box of boat stuff at my house yesterday. Nothing exciting like a new distributor, just boring maintenance stuff like oil, oil filter, fuel/water sep, serp belt, etc.

I know, I've been watching to too. I've got two solid days of work to do on the boat before it's water ready. I'm hoping the weather will calm down and be nice by Monday.
