Spent hours looking into the water leak.

First but her in a work rack to drain the bilge and ran her on the muffs, no sign of water in the bilge.

Then had her put into the water and let her sit for a couple of hours, water in the bilge seemed to be coming from the port side. Big dummy say it's not true, yep it is. I had the boat pulled and back to a work rack, sure enough when I installed the new water heater I had to drill new mounting holes. You got it two small hole all the way through.

Sanded the area and used an epoxy underwater stick to fill them. Calling for rain tomorrow but I took the week off so Tuesday back in the water to see if the repair is good.

Yes I am and trust me many more faults.

Rating but I had her set in the water for a few hours, dry bilge.

Now time for some boating.

You knucklehead.

Although I measured, re-measured, then re-measured again, when I was installing trim tabs on mine I got so paranoid about drilling the first hole I had to walk away from it for an hour. All those holes, all below the water line, was really messing with my mind. First time I ran it after the install I probably checked the bilge a dozen times!

Glad you're back on the water, Mike, and glad the boat is running well. A job well done.

Mike,

I'm sure some of you guys (and gals) may remember when Seapuppy drilled holes through the hull on his brand new Bayliner 350 with less than 2 hours on the engines. If I recall he was trying to install battery straps to hold down his tool box.

These things happen. That is what they make Expoxy for.

My former brother in law decided to help me and install the fire extinguisher which I kept in a side compartment on an old boat.

He grabbed his drill and some screws and mounted the bracket to the gunwhale. The boat had a single layer fiberglass hull. There was 2" of screws sticking right out the side of the hull.

I didn't end up having to explain to him why it was in the side compartment.

Hey Mike!
Sorry to bump such an old thread but I noticed you put that new 5.7L in the same year that the boat I'm (hoping) buying next week had the same motor installed. Since you've had it for four years now, how are you liking it? any feedback/advice? I'm going from years of big outboards back to the inboard world so I'm trying to relearn as much as I can in advance...

Mike may not answer you and again he might.
I have the same boat with a 5.7 and love it, but I am not big on going fast so I do not open it up a lot. just slow cruisin.

Yeah I don't need to go super fast either, although I am looking forward to having a peppier motor than what my C-Dory had. Loved that boat, but the maxum + 5.7L is like a hot rod compared to a prius.

The original 5.7 that came with the boat was rated at 260 HP and was ok but the new engine was a brand new Vortec long block rated at 300 HP + and is a big improvement. Are you sure the engine is a Vortec and not a rebuilt older 5.7?

No I'm not 100% certain...

the owner told me he had done a new bravo 3 in 2015 (mechanic confirmed) and wished he had done the motor at that time.. but went back and did the motor and exhaust manifolds in 2016.

I spoke with the mechanic he said it was a new long block with a warranty. 5.7L MPI. They did the injectors and heat exchanger at that time too.

The pre Vortec has 12 bolts on the intake while the Vortec only has 8 bolts. Can you post a close up of the engine with the cowl removed?

Hmm might not be able to until friday when I get on the boat with the surveyor. However I know he specifically put the same motor in the boat that he had in his K1500 Suburban that he towed with. (1996) and I believe those are listed as the Vortec 5.7L / 350 L31 from '96 to '99. could be wrong... but cautiously optimitistic.

I know he took the boat to Alaska a few times and intentionally upgraded expecting to do the Alaska trip again.

My 1997’s original engine was not a Vortec. Hope yours is.
