Default Engine Time!

Well folks just found out my main bearing are shot.

I was out boating today and noticed the oil pressure dropped by about half to 30 psi. I stopped the boat and at idle it dropped to 5 psi and I could hear rapping. Made it back to the marina rapping all the way. Removed the belt no change. Grabbed the crank pully and can move it up and down

Had the shop mechanic look at it and he agrees.

19 years but only 445 hours, oh well it's done. Now need to figure out path forward. Limited funds as going through a divorce right now. Guess it's more time for the pool and beer.

Hope the rest of you have a better season.

Yes ditto on that! Well I hope you can figure somehow to keep your season going, so keep that head up and keep smiling and all that other positive crap I can think of.

I would think for all advice and help you have given on this forum we should get an engine fund going for you Mike.

Well Roger this is going to take several boat bucks, so collect away.
How about some beer money?

Seriously I enjoy the challenge helping others resolving issues.

Cannot speak for its earlier life but since I have owned it only Merc or quicksilver oil and filters. I bought her in 2008 with 163 hours.

Up till now I have been and trying to decide if I want to take this on but at 55 years old with a ruptured disk and being 6'4" not sure I have it in me to replace the engine.

Well, that indeed sucks, Mike, and won't be a fun job.

Last year I had to replace the big fuse that mounts to the + battery cable post on the starter. Very, very tough to get to on our boat, I really needed arms about a foot longer. And oh, detachable eyeballs would have also been helpful. Given that experience, my age, and my short stature I can confidently say that there's noooo whey I'd even think about pulling/installing an engine that boat. Hell, I changed the spark plugs (and cap/rotor) for the first time this season (they'd never been changed) and vowed to never do THAT again either.

Have them pull it, then you can swap all the externals from the bad to the good. Have them re-install it.

I'll contribute to the re-power fund.

Well the drive is off and the engine completely unbolted and ready to be pulled. Rain tomorrow which is ok as I need a break. Not the vacation week I had planned. Still undecided on repower plan, considering a power pack, new vortec long block carb, ignition.

Drive shaft slides into coupler on back of the engine. One could pull the engine with it installed but the alignment must be checked when the engine goes back in so the drive will to be off anyway.

Thought about it but ordered a new 350 Votec long block today. Thinking of a half closed cooling system as well. Also when the engine is out I'll replace the hot water heater and plastic thru hulls that are flaking.

There were some heat exchangers for sale around Annapolis a few months ago on craigslist. I just finished converting my two 7.4Ls. Pretty easy.

Was the original engine a 5.0/305?

Yea, good time to replace all the questionable bits while you have the space to get to them.
