well..it really depends on if you still have a warranty on your engines/drives or not......if you have no warranty left..then your free to use anything...it also depends on where you boat..
I'm in the pacnorwest so I use w0-50 wt oil...but I'm under warranty so I have to use quick silver synthetic....the reason is that if your under a warranty then if I'm using say castrol syntec...and an engine fails...they may not pay to replace the engine if they find out I'm not using a marine grade oil......

I know some people that use royal purple oils..swear by them..gotta remember that the marine engine works 3 times as hard as a car engine...marine oils have other additives that help the engine work in the marine environment and also has anti water additives....

well ok ,I understand where you are coming from, but is quick silver the only company that makes Marine grade oil ??

what classification API does gasoline marine engines need?? What about west marine oil , or some other companies ???

I have 3 more years under warranty , so I do not want to do something dumb

Hi John,

If you're still under warranty and you should know that if you have any engine problems, Mercruiser MAY not honor the warranty if you've used anything other than Mercruiser original products, then I think you'd be playing with fire NOT to use their products. They're not that much more expensive. I'm no longer under warranty and I only use their 4-cycle, 25W-40 oil and their High Performance gear lube.

what Richard says.....the warranty is the big issue.....as long as your under the mercruiser warranty...just stick to the mercruiser line of oil and filters...after that ...you go to wally world and get syntec if you want too...the main thing is to get oil that has special additives for the marine environment.....more heavy duty oils rather than say..car racing oil...

Keep in mind Mercury owns Quicksilver, so of course they're only going to recommend their lubricants in their engines, outdrives and outboards. My Merc 454 recommended 25W50, my 496 recommends 25W-40 Synthetic. That is an odd weight to find and I've only found it in Quicksilver, so that is what i use.

if you go for a cheaper brand..... it can cost you a lot of money when something go's wrong.....so use what they advise... the less change you'r getting problems (but this is just my opinion)
