Default 3.0l Mercruiser tries to stall around 3000 rpm

Hi All! First post, and of course, it comes with a question.

When accelerating smoothly/slowly, I hit a spot around 3000 rpm where the motor bogs down. At his point, if I continue to accelerate slowly, it will stall. If I stop accelerating and let it sit where it is, it "catches up" (the only way I know to describe it), if I either back off or accelerate quickly past this point (about 1 inch of throttle movement) it runs fine.

Otherwise, it runs as expected with no problems.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!!

Yissnakk welcome aboard.

Sounds like ignition breaking down. What year is the boat? Last time tuned? How old is the gas? Fuel filters new?

I do not know when the last tune-up was. The boat is a 1996 model but was actually purchased from and left the dealer in early 1998. I just bought it last year from the original owner who had kept it well maintained. The oil and fluids are all fresh and the plugs are about 2 years old, but have only barely been used (the boat wasn't in the water for the last two years, but the owner started it and ran it periodically with the mouse ears and a hose)
The Fuel filter was also changed last year as well and has only been running regularly in the last couple of weeks.

It's just weird that it only happens at that point in acceleration. I'm taking it in for a full service at the end of the season but was hoping someone had an idea what it was so I could take some action myself.

Thanks!

Well if it happens when shifting in or out of gear I would suspect the shift interupt switch is not adjusted properly or the lower cable is bad. Since you say you are already in gear when it happen I would look into a bad accelerator pump on the carb

Thanks for the feedback! I'll see what that looks like.
