Default Battery Connections

Hello all,

Our first spring with a boat in 30 years. Got a used 1700XR last summer.

I unhooked the batteries last fall and pulled them out of the boat. Now I want to hook them back up and I forgot what goes where

Boat has a 2 battery system with the rotary control (Off, 1, all, 2)

Starboard battery - no problem

Port battery - has 2 heavy guage black (obviously to neg battery pole) a single Red (obviously to Pos battery pole). I have left 4 wires - two black tied to one connector and a white wire and a white w/ green stripe wire tied to a single connector.

I connected the white and the white w/green wire to the POS pole. With the rotary control switch off, I touch the NEG terminal and I get clicking up in the cockpit.

Bottom line - I just can't remember the connections and the manual does not give a good diagram of the battery connections. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Mike

Thanks for the reply.

I have the schematic from the manual. However, it only shows one battery and no switch.

Since the boat originally came with one battery. I would have to assume that those wires were added/changed when the second battery was added. I do not have those color wires near the battery on my 1800XR. As you can see in the diagram, the only green/white wire used was for the power tilt and trim. It's nice to have another outboard owner in the club. Do you have a Force or Mercury?

Thanks for the diagram. Much clearer than what I have.

I did figure it out after a while. Black and Green are always ground! I had a "duh" (or maybe a senior) moment there. The selector switch must have been an aftermarket addition to the boat. I do appreciate the reply.

I have the Force 120 built by Merc. Runs great for its age (1998) with smooth power at about 3000 rpm. Looks good too. Suprisingly undated styling and affordable.

Thanks again for the help.

Looks like that diagram will be of a lot of use but also, I'd grab a multimeter and find out whats making circuits, whats already seeing power etc... a multimeter would make this possibly very confusing and expensive job (if you connect up wrong) into a quick 5 minute task.
