All DC out - Maxum Boat Owners Club

Hi All,

Took the boat out this weekend (01 2900SCR)and while I was raising the anchor, the chain got kinked and stopped up the windlass which in turn took out all my DC. I looked in the manual but I could not find any info on a main fuse or breaker for the DC electrical system. I checked the individual fuses and all seemed ok so leads me to believe there must be something I'm msising.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same exact boat/model/year, etc... I wonder if the circuit breaker for the windlass failed and caused the problem? My windlass circuit breaker is located in the storage compartment out in the salon to port... mounted to the aft "wall" OF that storage compartment. It's a black thing (about 2" x 2" square) with a red reset button and black lever that swings downward when it trips. Lewmar sells them but if you Google "Lewmar Windlass Circuit Breaker" you'll see a bunch of them (they ain't cheap!)

My windlass circuit breaker failed on me a few years ago requiring me to replace it. I determined it was bad by "bypassing" it altogether (I disconnected the wires leading to it and then just clamped them together, then ran the windlass for a quick moment and it ran fine). Maybe if YOU do the same circuit breaker-bypass as I describe, the rest of your DC will come back... who knows?

You might also try to see if there's power going to the main fuse panel up under the dash board. But I know those windlasses use a lot of power, and that circuit breaker is a quirky one at best... I'd suspect it's causing your lack of DC throughout your boat.

on the starter...the positive connection ...there is a fusable link...check that....it's a 60amp fuse that takes ALL the load for dc thru the starter first...

Just thought I'd update this thread just in case it helps someone else down the line. My 2001 2900SCR is a single 7.4MPI and a Genny. There is a 30Amp fuse in the engine bay in front of the engine close to the battery charger. That fuse is the one responsible for my entire DC outage. The strange thing is that its a 30 Amp. The one that blew when my windless got stuck was a 30 and we replaced it with the same but I'm wondering why it blows that fuse and not the one in the fuse box underneath the helm. I also question if the 30 is large enough. Anyway, if any of you have this unfortunate incident, this may be a good place to start. A always, appreciate the help.

Cymru, strange indeed that it's such a low-amperage fuse... I agree that one would think it would be much higher-rated. If you can, take a picture of where this is in your engine compartment, and post it here as I have the exact same boat but mine's a single 6.2L with no genny. Would like to know where it's at if I ever run into that problem.

That's easy. The anchor chain keeps jamming the windlass and blowing it.
