Default New Maxum owner

Greetings to all. Last week I bought a 3200 SCR, a Documented Vessel, from the second owner, who owned her for a year almost to the day. The first owner had passed.

The boat spent a long time at Boston Boat Works (manufacturer of the MJM line of yachts) and the service manager tells me that every system on the boat was gone through. New, latest generation, Gentec 5.7L - 315 hp, rebuilt Bravo 2 drives.

The boat is presently located in downtown Boston in the Constitution Marina. The next pier over hosts the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned vessel in the Navy.

The seller, a young bachelor, upon completion of the refit, completed the complicated 20 hour break in procedure and then took the vessel on a cruise to NY.

The seller met a very attractive young woman there and brought her back on the cruise home. While docked in RI for provisions and fuel, the seller found a Formula 42 PC for sale and bought it on the spot. This young man is obviously financially secure and on a roll.

I met the seller at the marina to view the vessel. The young man was anxious and in a hurry. My wife and I had barely heard about the refit when the above attractive young female boarded the boat and the seller said his new Formula was ready and he was heading out with his female friend now.

I was able to call and immediately confirm the complete refit with the service manager. The boat has 40 hours and a new owner (me) since the refit.

I made the young man an offer, he accepted, I had brought the appropriate bill of sale, I wrote him a check and he was gone. He kept the keys until the check cleared.

Things are moving at glacial speed with the documentation service. USPS headquarters is handling insurance quotes. I have yet to start the engines or even see the boat since buying it in possibly the quickest Maxum sale in history the Sunday before last.

I live in Kingston, which is on Kingston Bay, about an hour's drive south of Boston and I swear this is all true. If it had not happened to me I would say I like a shaggy dog story but not that shaggy.

No survey and no sea trial? There may be a reason the young man was in a hurry. He may not even own the boat.

Sorry but if this is a true story, I smell a sucker.

Welcome aboard

You just made the biggest mistake in not performing a sea trail and having her surveyed. I hope it works out for you and she is in good condition. Keep us posted on his things go and post some pictures once she's all yours.

If all this went down 2 weeks ago the check has already cleared. Why do you not have the keys then?

I think we are being played and will never hear a follow up on this. The story just sounds so wrong on every level.

The USCG Documentation is the title. If the name on the title matched the signature (Did (The OP) get a copy of his ID?) then he should be all set. I certainly would have taken the boat on a seatrial and had a survey. Confirmation that the refit had been done by the shop doesn't attest to moisture levels in stringers and transom, or functioning of systems.
