Default I like boats

Well I went ahead and bought my first boat. Its a 1999 1900sr bow rider. I paid $500 bucks and it came with a trailer. The problem is the motor had been replaced with a 5.7 suburban motor. It looks like the did put the brass freeze pkugs in the block and since I got the boat home I went ahead and pulled the motor... its a vortec with roller cam. A project
I want to go with an edelbrock intake and carb. Really thinking about a heat exchanger at least a half system. Hopefully this winter I can have everything ready for spring. I am missibg some things so I might need some help from experts here.

Welcome aboard

A good a great winter project to help carry us all through the winter.

Besides the freeze plugs the cam grind, ignition, fuel system are different for marine use. Also starter and alternator. Not sure what they used.

If you go with an aluminum intake then yes closed cooling.

Post some pictures.

Thanks!
It had the 5.0 in it previously so it looks like some of those parts will carry over. As for the cam it seems some beleive it doesnt need to be changed?
Pic before I got it home, had to replace a few things on trailer before I could tow it..

I pulled one head so far to clean it up. Its been sitting but bore looks really good. Boat itself it seems has been sitting since 2002!

A street cam has more overlap than a marine and this cam result in water being drawn into the cylinders from the engines back pressure.

Also a marine engine runs constant at high rpms while a street runs under 2K normally so lift is different for best power curve.

Yes folks run steet cams but not ideal and risk of water intrusion. You call but if redoing the engine why cheap out on the cam IMO.

The cam that came in this engine should be a 111 overlap, should be fine without sucking water. It may not be best at wot but for saving some money and getting this thing going im going to keep this cam for now.. I will consider myself warned.
I have pulled one head and cleaned the porting up.

I forgot to mention if raw water cooler the head gaskets should be marine which contain stainless steel instead of copper used in auto gaskets.

Good point. That was also one reason I wanted to pull the heads. Besides it had been sitting and mudd dobbers had made nests in the exhaust ports. Lol
Does anyone know if a heat exchanger will fit under the hood or what kind of battery size I need?

I cannot speak to this model but I installed closed cooling on a Sea Ray 200, 20' bow rider and it fit fine.

BTY not all closed cooling systems are designed to work with the lower flow of the Alpha water pump, Sea kemp and other do but read carefully to ensure the one you buy does.

Interior will likely get recovered as long as motor works out well and in budget..

How do the manifolds look, probably not far behind the risers at being end of life.

Also check the condition of the flappers while the exhaust is apart as they serve to prevent water from flowing back up the exhaust. They also will restrict the exhaust flow if they break off and fall to the bottom of the y-pipe.

The exterior of the drive looks good. Drain the lube to ensure no water or metal shavings.

Several folks have had great results cleaning seats with IOSSO.

I wonder if I should move this to the rebuild section..
the manifolds dont look nearly as bad as the risers but im thinkin about replacing the whole shebang anyway to be sure I wont have any issues with overheating. The flappers need replaced I did notice. Hopefully when im done it will be a reliable runner. Any idea what kind of speed I might be able to see with this thing. Im thinking 300hp about all the outdrive can handle..

I have one seat that cleaned up well, the stitching is breaking in some and stains on others from the cover collapsing and sitting on it.
I used soft scrub with bleach

FWIW- My 5.0ltr mpi w/alpha has Mercruiser (close as I can tell) closed cooing, and it has a Bravo style engine driven raw water pump.
