Default OPOS-Maxum 1988 project

Get ready. I just piced up a PROJECT. A 1988 1700XR. The hull is in great condition, the interior needs total redo. No motor, but I will deal that a lot later. Trailer is in great shape too. I'm Just knowledgeable enough with construction and wiring to be dangerous. My wire has the equipment and skill to do vinyl and trim. I just need tons of advice and knowledge about boat construction. All this for $300...to start...

welcome aboard

Is the boat set up for an outboard motor? If so then repowering should not be a big deal. Since your wife can handle redoing the interior and you own skills to do the rest that will go a long way to make this project worth while. Have you check the deck for soft spots which is common on an older boat? You may need to strip the decking and install need wood and carpet. The gel coat looks ruff and sanding with 2000 grit wet/dry paper will help followed buy polish and wax.

Thanks Mike, the interior is a complete redo with new wood, carpet, wiring, and trim work. All the trim pieces are in it, just need to get out and use as templates. No soft spots that I can tell. It is set up for outboard. I have no set time for completion. Just save a little money and buy something to go in it. I will post more pictures as I get into it to get advice and suggestions. I need this like I need a hole in the head. I think that it will be fun.

Another welcome....looks like a i/o set-up.

I would suggest if you can get the floor out, I would look at the stringer system in the boat. If those are broken away from the hull depending on the severity and just how much or little they are might be a rethink on your project.

U- tube has many tutorials on fiberglass and epoxy. Good luck and keep those pictures coming.

Not that we don't want you coming back, but take a look a www.baylinerownersclub.com website for idea. Restoring a Bayliner is a very common thing and there are many threads on this that go into great detail.

The biggest risk with this year range of ANY open boat is potentially rotten stringers and transom. This risk increases with age and the number of years the boat is stored protected from the elements. too often people make the assumption "It's a boat, it's MADE to be in the water". While this is absolutely true, it WAS NOT made to have water IN IT. rainwater and snow (depending on the region) can collect inside and eventually rot the floors and stringers.

(At the risk of being a party pooper) A word of caution..... The #1 repair to be worried about on boats such as this are "Replaced floors and Carpeting". This typically indicates there were spongy floors. The rot almost never stops at the floor. I would fully inspect the transom and stringers before I put a dime into the boat. This means getting moisture readings.

Thanks Shrew. I know this is probably going to be a complete restore. Like I said, I have no set time table and this is a piddle project to keep me busy. On the positive side, I took all cushions out and disassembled them to start. Most of the wood backs were total rot, but it looks like I can reuse all the foam, only putting on new backing and having the wife recover with marine vinyl. If weather permits, this weekend I will start taking all side trim off and seeing what I can salvage for patterns. It is little victories that I see that will keep me motivated...I hope.

Just Looked at the HID....USHE87MAC888. It would appear that this is an 1800XR instead of 1700XR as I originally posted. Any thoughts?

Question for Biggerseagar or anyone that can help. I have the same kind of boat except that mine is a 1989 1700XR; What is a stringer system in the boat? Just finished repairing the trailer, but the boat is going to be a project for sure.

Wood stringers glassed in. You are probably headed for as similar job as in this thread.

Got all the foam out today. Starting to trim the tabbing so there will be less grinding. Still debating on chopping or decapping.
