Going bigger to a 3700 or 4100

I just sold my boat and this year I decided to upgrade. I have in mind either a 2000 or 2001 3700 or a 4100 but the boats currently available in my area and within my price range have the 7.4 that I heard are not powerful enough for those heavy boats.
I would appreciate comments from current owners and their opinion on this matter.

welcome to the zoo marc.......hope someone with those big boats can comment...my thinking is anything over 20k lbs needs to have either big blocks or diesels....now a few yrs ago I got the opportunity to drive a 4100 with big 8.1ltr engines and it ran extremely well.....as long as you keep the bottom fairly clean and the engines tuned...it shouldn't be a difference....but ....diesels get a little bit better gas mileage (as if that should be used in the same sentence as boating)....but they are a hair more economical.......

Donot know about the 41 but you 3700 has 7.2 MPI's and it runs great but 30 gals an hour at 3200 rpm's but I believe the 2ed bedroom on the 41 is bigger

Is that a 7.2 or 7.4? I'm not familiar with the 7.2. The 7.4 (454) used to be the big boy. This was replaced by the 8.1 (496), then shortly afterwards by the 8.2 (502). I've never seen anything larger installed in a cruiser. I think after than, you're getting into Diesals. Twin 7.4's to 8.2's aren't going to effectiely push more than about a 25,000-30,000 lb of boat through the water. If I were looking for a 37-41 ft. boat, i'd be looking at Diesal's, otherwise fuel is going to be ridiculous.

Thanks for the comments. The more I think and the more I hear about it, the diesels are the way to go. I just have to prepare myself to spend more money or to get an older boat.

I have 6.2's on my 3500 and it handles very well.... I would think 7.4's on a 3700 would be fine... Just don't Carrie unnecessary stuff. Good luck with your new Maxum.....they are great boats!

We have a 3700 with 7.4's. It will top out at a little over 30 MPH but since we are land locked and in no hurry we usually cruise at 1200 RPM. It's just the two of us so we have plenty on room.
