Line 1 or Line 2

Ok, sorry if this subject has been brought up before and I missed it.
1999 Maxum 2800SCR. I have 2 power lines, My switch is switched over to line 1. Everything works fine. I have to shore power cords going from the dock supply to the boat. 2 plugs, 2 cords, 2 lines. My question is WHY? Some one keeps unpluging my line 2. If line 1 is powering everything and line 2 powers everything. Why is it there? What is it used for? WHY?

Sorry if this question seems stupid but no one has ever told me why I have 2 lines to power my boat. The sales guy that sold me the boat told me it is there because its there. Now I know that is not the real reason.

yeah,
actually on your AC panel..there are 2 sides to your panel...a side and b side...
side 1 is your a side ...or actually to be more correct to the port side of the boat..
side 2 is your b side...or the stbd side along with your ac/heat...so..there should be a switch that says "Parallel"...switch it too parallel and connect your #1 side shore pwr too the shore pwr station....

or..get one of those "Y" connectors for the shore pwr.....connect both ships side shore pwr leads to the "Y" and the connector to the shore pwr connection box.......that way your still getting both shipside ac panel being pwred......won't have to switch to parallel....

That will also help me, at some marinas I have the fortune to plug both my lines in. However, that is not always the case.

not cheap at over 500 bucks...but this is what I was talking about...might be able to do some shopping and get it a bit cheaper...
the other option is to go the parallel reconfigure route...I do this one and you have to manage your pwr a bit..but everything will work....

just cant see the sense in using that $500.00 + Y adaptor 2 x boat leads into one outlet, your limitation is set by the size of the C/B at the outlet i.e. if your boat load is 20amps per lead = 40amp total load and your C/B at the outlet is 25amp you will trip the C/B at that 25amp. So the 2 leads 1 for each shore outlet is needed to sustain your 40 amp load i.e. 25amp #1 outlet /lead 25amp#2 outlet /lead
If your boat power board can be paralleled so as to use one lead it is the same as that Y adaptor you still can’t pull any more than the limitation the shore C/B rating for that 1 outlet.

The ratings and loads are just an illustration to give you an idear of why the 2 leads

I built my own Y-adaptor from parts they sell at West Marine. Then went to Lowes and bought 15 feet of 12g 3 strand industrial wire and a exterior water tight box junction box. Total was $98.00. It works just as good as any Y-adaptor.

I am going down to the boat on Sunday. I will take some pictures and post them here. It was very easy to build!.

On my 97' 2800 SCR Line 1 controls everything except for the a/c. Line 2 powers the a/c unit. They most likey did this because of the ramp up in Amps when the a/c starts. If it was on the other line it would most like trip the breaker killing everything.

i just bought a y connector for 250 bucks at west marine...they had it on sale...anyway....as stated above..you can get the parts and build it yourself or buy one....

I didn't have the time to build one so opted to buy....the 50 amps on the docks will run the whole boat fine...
