Water pump impellers

Do any of you really change the lower impeller every year as Merc suggests?

when I had my 2455....I'd replace it every yr..it's cheap insurance..22 bucks for the impeller and it takes maybe an hr to change it out and replace the drive.....
6 bolts and the drive drops down...you can set it up on a work bench ...then there are 2 or 3 screws I think that holds the housing on ...pull the impeller and replace....make sure you lube the impeller up so it doesn't start dry.......

it really is cheap insurance though.....

I have the 2700 with b3 drive..the impeller is in the engine bay and doesn't need replacing for about 300 hrs....it's new last yr and barely has 20 hrs on it....so...we're good to go..

I will be replacing mine as well this year. Along with a jizillion other odds and ends.. Gotta love the mercstuff.com website!

On my alpha, attached to a 1900 SR2, I also replace it every year... the same time I do the out drive oil change... as the previous poster noted, its cheap insurance. I don't put a lot of hours on my boat, 90% of its time on the water is spent anchored in a cove so when I remove the impeller it looks virtually brand new but I figure I spend more on a few beers at a bar than it cost to replace so why not. :D

Well said. A majority of my time is spent beached, but the sand content does worry me a bit. Cant be good for the seals and such..

On our last boat {1998 2355 Bayliner alpha One} I changed it at about 300 hrs and it looked fine . The dealer told me that they are a longlife impeller and did not need to be changed every year.I did not plan on doing it again for another 300 hrs.

Living in Wisconsin, some years there are only 10 or 20 hours on the boat. I thinkI am going to check it this year and then go to an every few years schedule.
