I need help with my prop

:roll: I have a 1900sr with a alpha 1 4.3L v6 190hp my prop is chiped and needs to be fixed. The numbers on the prop are m6 412 and 48 78124 A40 23p and i would assume that it is a 23 pitch but is it a 14, 15, or 17x23 I dont know how to tell plus i would like to know if a 4 blade prop is better than a 3 blade prop and what would be the difference in blade pitch . Should I go higher or lower in pitch?

welcome to the zoo....
well..to answer your question...there are a few things we need to know...like what is your wot..wide open throttle...meaning when you slam the throttle to full pwr...what is the rpm on the engine..according to your owners manual..you should be between 4200-4800 rpm...
with that said.....if your running a 14x23 and hitting say 4400 rpm...then that's where your going to want to be at..however ..if say your looking for a better hole shot...then say a 14x21 or 14x19 prop is going to probably put you near the high end of the rpm range...which is getting up where the engine is really close to it's limits...now if your swinging a 17x23 prop and only getting something like 4200 rpm or less...then you are loading your engine...
the easiest way to check the diameter is to measure the distance from the ctr of the hub to the tip of the blade...multiply that by 2...that should give you your first number......

Thanks for the welcome. I believe that I am getting in the RPM range of 4300 to 4500 on W.0.T., but the boat is sluggish getting out of the hole. When it finally gets on plane it smooths out and runs good.I am going to measure and check the size of the prop, like you suggested. I would like to know what the best prop would be for hole shot and speed. Thanks for the info. I will be in touch.

the smaller the pitch..the faster the hole shot will be...so..if your running a 14x23x3...and change to a 14x19x4...your gonna get a better hole shot....but the other factors are boat loading...fuel load..water load..people...gear...etc...and the other factor to think about is if you have trim tabs and are using them properly....that alone will tell you skads of information..for example..I have a 2700scr...28 ft long...I need to deploy my tabs in the down position before applying throttle...as I get up on plane..I reset my tabs to the running positions so that I get proper bow angle and fuel burn...then bump the drive up till the boat frees up some and I gain about 200rpm.....she will settle down and then I can trim left/right to get a comfortable ride.....

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if you have every had a problem with your boat fishtailing ? My boat does it bad when you run at about 20-25 mph. I have trimed it every way and even tryed a big hydro foyle. Any ideas how to fix??

can you describe the conditions and what you mean by fishtailing???...not sure what you mean..

when we are crusing at about 25 mph you can hold the sterring wheel just as steady as possible and the boat moves left to right . I thought that it was the hydro foyle but I took it off and there was no change. So then i thought it was a trim issue but that made no difference. It is strange it just moves back and fourth by its self kinda like it is zig zaging. Any ideas?

well..if your drive is tight when you grab it and give it a shake....bout the only thing that can make it wander like that is loose steering....now if it was wandering all over the place at low speed...that would be normal.....

high speed wander is definitly steering...

HEY YOU GUYS WILL PROBABLY THINK I AM CRAZY BUT I JUST BOUGHT MY PROP AT BOATERS WORLD . THE PROP AND HUB KIT WAS ONLY $75. IT INSTALLED EASY AND THE BOAT RUNS LIKE A DREAM WITH IT. THANKS FOR ALL YALLS HELP
