adjusting shift linkage 06 1800mx

so my problem is when I am moving forward then put it where nuetral is supposed to be it is still idleing forward. also when i attempt to put it in reverse it grind or clicks what ever you want to call it like I am forcing it the manual i bought just is not very clear on the adjustment

take it to a qualified mercruiser mechanic...adjusting that thing is sometimes tricky...if your idle is too hi...it will be extremely hard to get in and out of gear...make sure the idle is around 600-650rpm.....then see if it's easier to shift in and out of gear....also it should just clunk into gear...

Thanks for the quick reply SP! I'm glad I found this forum.

My idle is ok (around 600) so it must need an adjustment. I'll get the mercruiser guys to check that out when I take it in for winterizing.

I tried to adjust my throttle/shift linkage this past summer. Took about 30 seconds to screw it up and the entire rest of the weekend to fix it. Wont mess with that one again. Also, if its clicking while going into reverse, thats normal. Put into reverse quicker, and it should "clunk" as stated above.

This is one of those things best left to the experts! I took mine in and 20 mins later it was great!

yes i finally gave in and took it to mechanic and of course he told me the linkage needed to be adjusted took him about five minutes to fix what i spent month playing with. wont do that again.

So I have a diferent boat, 1995 2300SC, a different engine, 5.7L, and a different problem, hangs in reverse when shifting to neutral, but sounds remarkably similiar. I was going to try to adjust this when I put 'er in next season, I am handy, but it sounds like a $50 bill well spent at the shop! Thanx; Cp
