I have a hull mount depth sounder that seems to work only at cruise spped, idel speed or at a complete stop. I don't think I have a bad connection at the helm. I get 2 dashes when it does not measure. what else should I check?

You might be stuck with system as is. The transducer is probable a puck type, shoot through hull type. When the hull (where the transducer is located) is not completely immersed in water you will no longer get a signal. This why when you get up on plane you lose the readings.
The only thing that you might check, find our where it is mounted on the hull. If you can remove it, relocate it as far back and as close to the center of the hull you can.

Thanks. I'll take a look at it this weekend.

mine does that too..but I boat in water that is about 1100ft deep or more in places..the max limit on the sounder is only about 300+/- ft of water......so...if your depth is greater than that...it displays dashes....mine is way back in the stern near the engine but usually scares me when it displays 1 to 3 ft while I'm on plane and in deep water....that's usually due to water temp variations/salenity/critters..etc......sure scares the bejezous out of you though......
