Hello all!
I'm new to the site, and have a 1991 2300scr with the merc 5.7 / alpha one combo. I have two questions....what sort of performance should I be expecting, i.e. top speed, cruise speed, GPH and RPM at top speed and cruise, and what is the weight (dry) of this boat? (Iguess I have more than two questions...) Is it possible to change the two deck windows with the rounded ones off a 2400scr of the same year? (They leak on my boat)

Any reply / theory would be welcome.

Where are they leaking? Around the frame or the window itself? If the frame, remove the window, scrape out the old caulk and recaulk with 3M 4200 caulk. If the window, replace the gasket in the frame where the window closes against it.

Thanks for the replies. I will attempt to replace the window seal gasket soon, and the weight figure makes sense to me based on what I know about the boat.

I'm thinking of purchasing a 92 2300 SCR and was wondering how you made out? If I do buy, I will have to replace to prop. What do you suggest? What is your max speed? A lot of questions but I'm a semi-newbe.

there are a few things to concider before you replace the prop....first off..what is your WOT..wide open throttle as required but the factory......or max rpm ....usually in the neighborhood of between 4200-4800 rpm...that is where you want to be on rpm..the second is for every inch in pitch change..your rpm will change by about 200 rpm.....so if your running a 15x19...at 4200 rpm...going to a 15-17 will change your rpm by about 400 rpm...or roughly about 3800 rpm..which takes you out of the torque range of the boat...changing to a 4 bladed prop may help ...or getting a bigeared prop will definitely help out too.....

Did I miss something? You started at 4200RPM dropped down "2" so should not the RPM go up to 4600?

kinda goofed...i was doing the math in my head ...but of course my fingers were typing faster than i was thinking.. :? ...going down in pitch will increase the rpm...so yeah.....I had it right in my head......geez...damned fingers....one day I'll get em to slow down....haha.....sorry bout the confusion....
I was also thinking that at one time I was going to change my prop from a 20" pitch to a 22" pitch....so I was thinking my rpms would go down...right now my engine will rev to the rev limiter...right up too 5280rpm....needless to say I think it's wrong..the factory thinks it's ok.... :shock:

I have the opposite problem. My rpm will just barely exceed 4200 and one would think that is about 1000 turns too slow. The mechanic, however, said that the guages are not all that accurate, and when he put his Tac on the engine, the reading was closer to 5000 which is OK. About the only way to get the optimum is the way Merc does it at their test facility.. you slap a prop on and go see what it will do.

There is an outlet near me that allows you to test props, exchanging til you find the best match. This would be best done on the same day where the conditions remain the same through-out the testing since there are so many variables. I might give it a go in the coming season, just to see what the differences are, but the results will be boat specific since I have added tabs and the boat now behaves differently.
