5.7L 230HP 16X16?

I just ordered a 16X16 prop for my 1992 Maxum 2300 SCR 230HP Alpha 1. Now I'm hearing that this prop may not fit my Alpha 1. The boat is new to me and the old prop is very crusty. The Maxum web site listed this as the original prop. Will this fit? What kind of performance should I expect?

It might not fit due to the diameter of the blades being so close to the cavitation plate on an alpha 1 drive!....I'd find another A1 drive somewhere or at a dealer and take a tape measure with you....most of them run a 15.5x19 prop....even a 15.5x21 prop....I ran the 15.5x21 prop on my old boat....I'd be concerned with expansion while at max rpm of the blades.....just my 2 braincells firing off....

I've got the same boat, 95 model, with the same HP in the 5.0L

We have a very good 'prop shop' here and the best all-around for my use is the 15x15. I asked about a larger (16) and they stated it was too large diameter. It will actually cavitate at the top near the upper fin plate. I'm happy with 40 mph max speed (moderately loaded and gassed, slower if were fully gassed and camping equipped). I get the bow out and over quicker than the higher pitches provide.

BTW- the 15 diameter is actually 15.5"

My 2100 5.7 has a 14" (maybe 14 1 / 8" ) x 19 pitch on my alpha 1, has a very good hole shot with top speed over 50. Not sure how well that would work on yours, being a little bigger and heavier.

Wish I had a 5.7L. The HP ratings in the mid-late 90's were close for both (5.0 vs 5.7) but the torque developed is better with the 5.7L. This allows you to spin a smaller diameter, wider pitch with better results.

They're gonna put a new prop on my '96 1900 SR, it's the 5.7L but the dealership/repair shop was talking about a 15x15. I thought maybe it needed a 14.25x17.

Should I stop him before he installs what he has in stock and insist on the 14.25x17? Or maybe 14x19?

Just curious. I tend to trust the professionals but sometimes they just do what is most convenient and not necessarily what may be the most efficient.

Any guesses on what the fuel mileage (mpg) is on the 5.7?

I'd try it at first and see what the performance is ..if it's not to your liking..take it back too them and let them know.... :D
