This year is the year, is the year of lots of little spending on my boat. So the name M T Pockets is a good name. I put the boat in the water and took off across the lake, looked down to find out I was doing -0- mph across the lake. I stopped the boat, got in the water and found that the little wheel was still free to spin. I started it up and still no speed ......
Any one have an Idea

Assuming that you have an Alph I/O, there is a VERY LITTLE hole on the leading edge of the drive. You might not even see it if you don’t look closely, but you can certainly feel it if you run your finger along the front edge. It’s above the “bullet”, but below the cavitation plate.
Anyway, it’s a little “V” shaped hole in the front edge. Take a small drill bit or wire and push it in the hole. If you insert the bit and it goes in about 3” and hits metal, you don’t have a clog. If it doesn’t go in 3” or you don’t hit metal, turn the bit BY HAND (don’t use a drill), and it will grab the clog. Pull the bit out, remove the debris from the bit, and do it again, until you get the bit to insert all the way and hit metal. Then you are unclogged.
If you remove the clog (or didn’t have one to begin with) and your speedo still doesn’t work, look above the front of the cavitation plate. There is a plastic connector. Take it loose by turning it (counter-clockwise, I believe), then blow thru the hole on the leading edge. You should be able to blow through. I did it with my own air, no problem.
If you don’t have a clog in the hole and are able to blow through, then you either have a clog in the line you just disconnected, or the speedo diaphragm is broken. The next step would be to disconnect the tube from the back of the speedo and blow back toward the drive, with the hose still disconnected at the drive. Don’t blow towards the speedo with the tube connected, or you will rupture the speedo diaphragm.

Thanks Again.

BTW the little wheel is usually for a fish finder or snoar that has a speed log.
Both my sonars have those wheels and being in salt water year round I'll have to clear them a couple of times a year. What a Pain

3388sam so glad you told me about that little hole in the front of the drive. It was not clogged but I followed it up to find the connector clip broken. Now if I can only find someone who has the part to fix it.
Thanks again

When i am sitting still with the motor running the gauge is at 150. I can sit there for twenty min. When I start moving at about 3 thousand rpm the gauge began to rise at about 220. As soon as I reduce my speed to a idle the gauge drop in about one min. what can this be. Thanks for any help

I have a 2300scr Maxum When i am sitting still with the motor running the gauge is at 150. I can sit there for twenty min. When I start moving at about 3 thousand rpm the gauge began to rise at about 220. As soon as I reduce my speed to a idle the gauge drop in about one min. I change the pump in the lower unit. what can this be. Thanks for any help

are you talking about your speedo or tach.??...if it's the speedo...
sounds like the speedo is blocked and pressurized...assuming you have an alpha one merc...there is a hole in the leading edge of the lower part of the drive..check that to see if it's blocked....you may have to remove the lower part of the leg and clear it out if it has mud blocking it......also check the hose that connects the upper and the lower part....
I had my a1g2 drive do the same thing...took my lower drive off and found the chamber where the speed log is was just chocked full of muck..... :D arrr

Looks like we have a 'cross-threaded' thread :P
I believe the info posted is reference to cooling water temps (150-220 dF)
220 seems a little high but I don't have data to support concerns. Has the engine warning (audible) horn sounded at the high temps? If not, either your within the specs or its malfunctioning (according to my manual)
My 5.0 Alpha 1 runs 155 at idle, 180-195 above 3500 rpms. Normal 'average' is around 180. All this depends on engine load (trim, weight) and surface water temps.
I'm not a big fan of the 'stock' factory guages. Too many quality variables.

Had the same problem with my 2400 SR. Found two wires in the engine compartment. Connector came loose. Flip the engine shroud up (engine off) and directly in front of the fly wheel there are two wires on the bulkhead toward the bow, running straight down to the pick-up with connectors. I disconnected and re-connected and all has been well...Good Luck

I have tried to drill out the pitot tube, and I stuck a wire into it. I've blown the line from the speedo with an air compressor. Neither worked. Where is the connector clip? Any other suggestions?

disconnect the gauge at the dash....try blowing air down that way...you may have to remove the lower unit and fish out whatever is blocking it...sometimes that's the only way...
