Newbie question...

I recieved a handheld VHF radio as a Cristmas gift last week. I wanted one as we will be doing some open water boating this year (we usually just stick to the lake).
The user guide gives the ins and outs of the radio functions but doesn't give any tips on...well... on usage. I mean, is there certian protocols to adhere to even on the public channels?

Any help would be appreciated.

well..there is a radio protocol that should be practiced...ie..using the phonetic alphabet for letter id....call signs like boat names....not using the language of CB radio communications...ie breaker breaker rubber duck....not practiced on VHF....certain channels are for boat traffic and controlled by a harbor master....others are for emergency use only and hailing...other channels are for boat to boat and then the coasties use certain channels for working channels...when you got the radio...it should have come with a radio instruction guide as well as channel usage and some even comes with the phonetic alphabet to make you sound like a pro...
so...read the guide and like boating ...practice ..practice ...practice.........and good luck with the radio........I have one and it's great to have both handy.....
