no hours gage

Looking at purchasing a 2000 1800 SR with the 190hp 4.3. Engine and outdrive look solid. Oil was pretty clean. Didn't see any leaks around engine or outdrive. Upholstery had no cracks or rips. Small rub in the gelcoat along the keel about 4 inches long. Owner says from beaching at the lake. Some small amounts of mold growing on steering wheel. There is no hour gage. Is this normal for this model? The guy estimates between 200 and 250. Anything else I should be checking? Planning to take it out for a test ride the first or second weekend of December. Anyone have any advice or answers? Have read most of the boards already to get as much information as possible. Thanks for any input.

well...since it's a used boat...several things need to be checked....check the oil in the outdrive..when was it serviced last....do a compression check.....when was the last time he changed the oil in the outdrive...should be done yrly.....take a plastic hammer and go around the transom and hull tapping ...when the sound changes from a solid sound to a thud...you have water in the hull......or.....the easiest is to pay for a survey.....they will check everything and make sure your getting a good deal..........here's a thought though....whenever your dealing with a used boat.....get it surveyed......and by a professional surveyor.......money ahead in the long run.......good luck and welcome to the zoo.... 8)

ps...an hr meter is rare on a small boat all the way up to and including some 30 ftrs....so...no...wouldn't expect to see one on a small boat.....

Thanks seapuppy. The service record produced showed engine oil and outdrive oil as just being changed in September. Water test is scheduled for Sunday the 3rd.

what your checking the oil for is water in the oil...foamy....good luck with the water test...check acceleration...drive movement from lock to lock on the steering....check the drive coming up and down...time to plane.......how it rides...etc...good luck...let us know how it goes....

Scout bought the boat....said everything went well cept for a few minor items which can be fixed easy enough...

See if there is not a small digital readout near the bottom of the RPM or Speed read out dial...(I can't remember which it is and mine is shrink-wrapped for the winter.) If you locate this small window within the dial, it is your hour meter. It should have an hour glass icon.

I did some research and it looks like 2001 is when all the good things got added to my model. in 2001 they added a remote drain for the oil as well as an hour meter. Some other minor stuff as well. I asked seapuppy about the tac not working and his response was to trace the wire back to the coil. I'm getting current when testing the wire between the gage and coil, but still no response on the gage. I guess this means the gage is bad. Any responses?

scout...the other thing to check is the connections at the back of the gauge...if they are corroded..the tach will not work or act goofy....congrats on the new boat-toy.....now you can spend lots of boat dollars on toys!!... :D ...sp

Thanks for the congratualations. It's amazing!! I haven't even had it a month and a few hundred are already gone. I think it'll be well worth it this summer when it's 120 degrees outside and the family is at the lake.

It does seem strange they wouldn't put hour meters in these boats...I've got a 2700SCR and I love her to death. But it stunned me to find no meter for her twin Mercs!!! Yes, in the end you have to rely on the marine surveyor's compression tests and basic things like the condition of the oil (if it hasn't been taken out!).
