Which new engine for a 2000 2800SCR would you choose?

Which new engine for 2000 2800SCR would you choose. My 7.4L MPI died today.
Time to repower with one of these bad boys. :lol:

350 Mag (5.7L) 300HP

377 MAG (6.2L) 320HP

496 MAG (8.1L) 375HP

Also I would like to have more space over my old engine, but don't want to spare HP. The 2800scr is a big boat Single screw.

The 496 (8.1L) is the Standard replacement for the 454 (7.4L). I have a 1997 2800 SCR and am in the process of having that installed right now. The 454 shows as either a 325HP or 300HP depending on where you look, but even those reported as being 325HP should really be more accurately showing as 300 HP. In my opinion the single 454 on the 2800 was just slightly undersized. I would absolutely not go with the 350 or ANY small block in that boat and have questions as to how efficiently you'll get on plane with that engine. When I was looking for my replacement engine, the 496 was the ONLY engine recommended.

BTW: the 496 & 496 MAG are slightly different

496 = 375 HP
496 MAG = 425 HP

I got the standard 496 (375HP) which will be absolutely fine for your application. The MAG is a high output 496. Most of the usuable HP between 375HP and 425HP is in the higher RPM's, which I doubt you'll really be tapping into anyway. I originally wanted to get the 496 MAG (425 HP). You'll also want to consider the type of outdrive that you have. ( I have a Bravo III, I have no idea what your running) The Bravo III that shipped on the 1997 was only rated to 400 HP, and Merc Strongly advises that you use the Bravo III X on the 496 MAG since it's rated for higher HP. Merc told me they were using standard Bravo III on the 496 MAG and were finding a lot of people were blowing up their outdrives. (Technically this only occurs if you're a yahoo and don't come off the throttle when the outdrive comes out of the water). I'm not driving a fountain here and I don't jump the boat, so the only time my outdrive comes out of the water is by way of Travel Lift.

I would look at the Mercruiser Remanufactered program. The engine is as good as a new one and much less money. I'm not sure where you're located (prices will vary) I was quoted approx. $15K on a new 496, and picked up a Remanned for $9787.00. These are engines that have gone out to schools and Merc classes or are buy backs from Manufacturs. They are completely gone through before being sold and are just as good as a new engine and still come with a 1 year warranty from Time of Installation.

I have a 1999 2800scr that was re engined in 2001 with a 6.2mpi 320hp this engine is a good replacement for the 7.4 it has slightly more horsepower than the 7.4 and is a small block so the engine is lighter and more fuel efficient,it planes very easy,i have just done a 150mile trip on the tidal rivers ouse and trent in england,17hrs at 8/10knots and 50mins at 33.5knots(2 onboard 3/4+ fuel tank and 1/2 water tank) calculated 133ltrs(approx) used, plugged the computer in before the trip 2000rpm against flow of river (approx3 knots) gps speed 8/9knots using 17ltr per hour,3500 rpm same river 20knots 42 ltr per hour,i have a bravo 3 leg,

So a 6.2 is a small block. You must have a lot more space to move around. Might have room for a gennie if I go with a 6.2.

While replacing the engine should I replace the outdrive also. Same age. 2000

I,m still running on the original 1999 bravo 3 out drive with the 6.2mpi if your out drive is good why change it,its your decision, there is quite a lot of space in my engine bay as the 2800scr was built to take 2 engines,

my 2003 2700scr had the 6.2ltr engine and a b3 drive...that was an unbeatable package....let me tell you this thing would cruise all day long and get up and move....I could spin it in the length of the boat like I had twins...docking was a dream compared to my 2455 bayliner.....that was always a white knuckled affair.....
the 6.2ltr has the torque and hp of the big block but the weight of a small block chevie engine....I'd definitely put the 6.2ltr in...
